Hair Donation Hero – Jocelyn
My name is Jocelyn Montecinos and I am currently 21 years old. I have Chilean background and I have been playing basketball since age 4. In 2016-2017, I went to America to play College basketball but I had to put that on hold as I got injured. I currently have my part-time job and my side job which is based on a hobby of mine, making handmade jewellery and other craft products.
I first heard about the hair donation program after I looked up online Australian hair donation places and AAAF popped up.
It was something I’ve wanted to do for about 3 years. My parents raised me to be a giving person, as the gift of giving is so precious. I always used to think of people who had lost their hair from an illness and how hard it would be, as it’s a big part of your identity. I always had the idea of donating it and I feel like it’s something that is so personal to give that fulfils my heart more. It’s an empowering moment and not only that, I have met so many people now that had alopecia just from me telling them I donated my hair.
I was nervous at first. But then when I got the first ponytail cut I was extremely happy and I felt really confident.
My hair was long down to my waist. I have always had very long and thick hair. When I was younger I would have cried at the thought of even getting a trim but now I know it’s going to grow back. Plus it’s a nice change and I like it! Everyone I have spoken to and all my friends and family love it and they say I suit it! They all commended me for my beautiful act.
I hope that by sharing my story I can raise awareness, and encourage others into doing it one day. As I feel like it’s something that many people don’t know and don’t know the effect it has on people mentally and physically. Not just on the person but the family as well.
If you’re considering donating your hair, I would say do it!! 100% would recommend for anyone that’s thinking about or to even do it once in their life. I thought being someone that had long hair my whole life would struggle to adjust but I absolutely love it!!! I have learned so much about myself and about others from doing it.
