Joe – Alopecia Story
Living with Alopecia: Rising Star on the Hockey Field
Living with alopecia universalis since I was two hasn’t stopped me from chasing my dreams in
hockey. Here in the Northern Territory, I’ve found my place not just as a player, but as someone
who gives back to the sport that continues to offer me so many opportunities.
There was something about hockey that just clicked with me. The fast pace, the skill needed to
control the ball, the way you had to think ahead – I loved all of it.
Sure, I had to wear extra sunscreen and a cap to protect my head during training and games, but
on the field, nobody cared what I looked like. They cared about whether I could defend crucial
passages of play and score under pressure. My teammates just see me as Joe, the defender who
could run for days and has a decent drag flick shot.

Being named NT U18 Men Player of the Tournament in 2024 was huge for me, but what really
makes me proud is being recognized as Hockey NT’s Young Volunteer of the Year. It’s important
to me to contribute to the sport beyond just playing.
On the field, I’ve developed into a strong defensive player. During tough matches, I’ve been part
of my hockey clubs’ defensive wall, helping hold the line even when we’re under pressure. But I
can also find the back of the net – scoring a hat-trick that I’m proud of.
My involvement in hockey has tested me physically and mentally and having alopecia has
taught me a lot about pushing through challenges. Being resilient and being my true self is an
important part of my approach to living with alopecia and playing hockey, either representing my
club or the Northern Territory. Having alopecia hasn’t stopped me from aiming high in my life,
but rather has taught me to be confident in who am I and knowing that anything is possible.

One of my biggest achievements was making my debut for the NT Stingers, in February 2025.
Being one of the youngest debutants at 17 and being part of the Stingers’ first victory in an elite
competition in over a decade is something that I am truly proud of and shows what dedication
can achieve.
When I step onto that field, my alopecia is the last thing on anyone’s mind. They see the goals,
the defensive plays, and the dedication to the sport. That’s exactly how I want it to be.
