Joe – Sponsorship Story
Hey everyone! Just wanted to share what’s been happening with my hockey lately – it’s been pretty insane!
So, I made it into the Northern Territory U/21 squad for Nationals, which is fantastic because I’m only 18! I have been putting in heaps of work on my skills and fitness, and it’s finally paying off. My stick work and speed have gotten way better, and the coaches have noticed how I read the game now. I am consistently hitting skills during practice and games on the pitch.

The absolute wildest part? They picked me as CAPTAIN! Seriously didn’t see that coming. When my coach told me, I was really proud that my leadership potential and commitment to the game has been acknowledged. It’s a huge responsibility but also so awesome that my teammates and coaches believe in me like that. Trying my best to lead by example and keep everyone pumped during training.
Living with alopecia hasn’t always been easy, especially in sports where everyone’s staring at you. But honestly, the Australia Alopecia Areata Foundation has been absolutely legendary. Their sponsorship program is a big part of the reason I can go to Nationals in Bendigo next month. They’re supporting by covering many of the costs and fees that go into participating in high level sports at a nationals tournament, from the pitch fees, tournament registration, sporting costs that a team must cover. Without them, it would be difficult for me to pay for these fees on top of my travel costs to go represent NT.

The tournament in May is going to be intense with the best young players from across Australia. I’m nervous but also super excited to show what our team can do. We’ve been training like crazy and everyone’s getting along really well.
Having alopecia while playing hockey at this level has taught me heaps about pushing through challenges. The support from AAAF has been massive not just for the money stuff but also for my confidence.
Can’t wait to captain the boys in Bendigo and show everyone what we’ve got!
